The ABCs of CBD: Cannabinoids in Dermatology and Skin Care

Cannabinoids (CBDs) are gaining popularity in both the skin care industry and the dermatology drug market and are becoming increasingly available to physicians and consumers. Cannabis-based personal care products suddenly seem ubiquitous all over the market, where CBD is a featured ingredient in everything from moisturizers and lotions to makeup. In medical dermatology, CBD has been studied in acne, eczematous disorders, lichen planus, melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer, melasma, prurigo, pruritus, psoriasis, scleroderma and systemic sclerosis, and seborrheic dermatitis.

Treating and Preventing Postinflammatory Hypo- and Hyperpigmentation

Postinflammatory hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation are common inflammatory dermatoses and dyschromia that can be attributed to several different causes and can lead to changes in the skin’s overall appearance. This includes loss or gain of pigment, which can be either partial, or total in instances of pigment loss, in nature. These conditions occur significantly more frequently and with greater severity in patients with darker skin phototypes, such as Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI.

Nail Surgery Pearls With Jane Bellet, MD

When course directors surveyed members of the Society of Pediatric Dermatology to determine sessions for this year's 48th annual meeting, an overwhelming number of pediatric dermatologists expressed the desire for additional nail knowledge. Jane Bellet, MD, FAAD, professor of pediatrics and dermatology at Duke University School of Medicine, presented nail surgery pearls during the session "Tiny Toes, Big Care: Navigating Pediatric Nail Procedures with Confidence" at the 2023 Society for Pediatric Dermatology Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina.

Recognizing and Managing Pediatric Skin Cancer With Early Detection and Education

We all have parents who come in with their child to have their moles checked and have major concerns, especially in the setting of a family history of skin cancer. Thankfully, pediatric skin cancers are very rare. However, we are encountering more and more pediatric patients with leukemia and lymphomas and those undergoing solid organ transplants. These patients in particular are at high risk for development of skin cancers in the future given their nature of immunosuppression. Believe it or not, skin cancer is the most common malignancy in pediatric patients post renal transplant and is the second most common in non–renal transplant patients.
