The Melanoma Research Foundation named Michael B. Atkins, M.D., the 2018 Humanitarian of the Year recipient at its recent DC Wings of Hope for Melanoma Gala.

The award was given in recognition of Dr. Atkins’ “unparalleled dedication to the prevention and treatment of melanoma and the compassion that has been a hallmark of his career in patient care,” according to a news release.

Dr. Atkins is deputy director of the Georgetown-Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Washington, D.C. He is also professor of Oncology and Medicine (Hematology/Oncology) at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He specializes in researching cancer immunotherapies, melanoma, renal cell carcinoma and predictive markers for response to biologic therapies.

“I rejoice in seeing my patients not just surviving, but thriving,” Dr. Atkins said at the ceremony.

Also, during the gala, 14-year-old melanoma survivor Melanie Wightman was presented with the Courage Award, and melanoma survivor and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt shared his experience and why the MRF’s mission is crucial in continuing the fight against the disease.
