Take-home Points to Manage Acne

Drs Joshua Zeichner, MD, and Mona Gohara, MD, provide take-home messages to providers treating patients with acne.

Joshua Zeichner, MD: Mona, thank you for having this discussion. I always love chatting with you.

Mona Gohara, MD: Thank you, Josh.

Joshua Zeichner, MD: We’ll give some takeaway points. I’ll give the cleanser takeaway points. You can give the moisturizer takeaway points. The goal of a cleanser, as we said before, is to remove soiling of the skin without compromising the integrity of the skin barrier. There are a lot of great cleansers on the market. We want to make sure we choose ones that contain technologies that are appropriate for our patients, as well as added ingredients that benefit the needs and preferences of the patients and their skin.

Mona Gohara, MD: As it pertains to moisturizers, we want a moisturizer that’s going to protect and soften and hydrate the skin. That’s important across the board. We shouldn’t randomly choose moisturizers when it comes to our patients with acne, eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis. We should understand the nuances of their skin disease and their personal preferences because we know that the wrong product can impair the skin and the right 1 can definitely help improve it. We should take the time to choose carefully and wisely when we’re recommending moisturizers for our patients.

Joshua Zeichner, MD: The best way to treat our patients with acne is to give the right recommendations in terms of therapeutic products. Whether they’re over the counter or by prescription, as well as complementary adjunctive products to help cleanse and moisturize to improve adherence and ultimately give our patients better outcomes.

Thank you so much for watching this Dermatology Times® Between the Lines presentation. We hope you found the presentation to be rich and informative. Thank you to my great colleague Dr Mona Gohara for joining me.

Mona Gohara, MD: Thank you so much.
