What cellulite? Cellfina leads the way

Cellfina is subscision of the fibrous attachments between the skin and fat layers. It is the only FDA-cleared device to have solid three-year data showing that the cellulite doesn’t come back, expert says.

The Cellfina (Merz) device is the only FDA-cleared device to have solid three-year data showing that the cellulite doesn’t come back, according to Dr. Cox.

“I reviewed that literature, looking at other things like Cellulaze (Cynosure) and others. If you critically review the data, nobody has three-year, long-term cellulite reduction data,” she says.

Basically, Cellfina is subscision of the fibrous attachments between the skin and fat layers.

“When you interrupt that, it lifts the skin and when you do it with suction, you’re allowing the fibrous bands to be cut at such a level that they don’t re-form. So you get this nice smooth skin,” she says.

Dr. Cox says dermatologists should keep in mind that bruising after Cellfina is pretty significant, and lasts two to four weeks. Patients should wear compression for three to seven days post procedure. And while patients might feel sore, they’re not likely to be out of commission for more than a day or two.

“Some patients can go back to sports the next day,” Dr. Cox says.

Disclosure: Dr. Cox did clinical trials for Liposonix (Valeant Pharmaceuticals), UltraShape (Syneron Candela) and Kybella (deoxycholic acid, Allergan). She is a consultant for Merz.
