VirginDerm16: Artists and innovators in paradise

A new meeting will offer attendees a first-hand look at what’s new in minimally-invasive cosmetic aesthetics set against a tropical paradise.

The inaugural CME-certified VirginDerm16 meeting will take place January 22 through 24 at the newly renovated Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

The meeting includes timely interactive presentations and demonstrations on topics from contouring and rejuvenating with soft tissue fillers, to uses of light and energy-based devices and the latest in body contouring. The idea is to arm attendees with information they can directly translate to practice.

Faculty interaction

The emphasis will be on interaction, according to VirginDerm16 co-chair and faculty member David McDaniel, M.D., who directs the McDaniel Institute of Anti-Aging Research and Laser and Cosmetic Center, Virginia Beach, Va.

David McDaniel, M.D.“We designed this meeting to have faculty who are not only great communicators and teachers, but who are also some of the best artists and innovators in the cosmetic world today,” he says. “Our goal was to allow the faculty to teach and interact in an unfettered way. And to allow the attendees to have a special experience to interact with the faculty at a level which is uncommon at most meetings today and without the time pressure and distractions we so often experience at meetings,” Dr. McDaniel says.

It’s of particular interest to cosmetic dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons and plastic surgeons. Meeting faculty will share treatment results from some of today’s newest cosmetic procedures-in some cases, images that have been taken days before the meeting.

Dr. McDaniel says that 2015 has been a remarkable year for new FDA clearances and other significant therapeutic advances impacting cosmetic dermatology. VirginDerm16 offers one of the first opportunities in 2016 to learn from faculty who not only helped to develop these advances but also participated in FDA studies, he says.

New therapies, practical approaches

“Perhaps more significantly, it is a special opportunity to learn how to practically and optimally integrate these new therapies into our practices. The attendees will be getting a ‘first look’ at some of these latest results - in particular, the clinical effects of various technique modifications that are evolving post-FDA clearance,” Dr. McDaniel says. 

VirginDerm16 co-chair and faculty member Robert Weiss, M.D., says the destination is an important perk.

Robert Weiss, M.D.“This meeting was designed to teach the highest level of cosmetic dermatology in a beautiful tropical setting: A relaxed and intimate setting, which matches Hawaii for ambience and also requires no passport,” says Dr. Weiss, a clinical associate professor of dermatology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Md. “The focus will be on natural-looking results, using unique combinations of fillers, neuromodulators, devices and topicals for maximizing patient satisfaction and retention and long-term results, with an emphasis on patient safety.”

Dr. Weiss agrees that the timeliness of presentations will help attendees to get a head start on what’s new in cosmetic dermatology. Some of the hot topics include: non-invasive neck rejuvenation, with discussions about Kybella injection (Kythera Biopharmaceuticals), neck cryo-lipolysis, modified Ultherapy techniques (Ulthera) and novel radio-frequency applications.

“There will also be a brand new session on non-invasive body contouring with new devices being introduced that will make liposuction seem obsolete,” Dr. Weiss says. “There are many more [of these] latest developments, in which the true experts will be sharing how they actually utilize techniques, injectables and devices for their patients.”
