Treatment Advances, Insights Expected at the 2023 ACAAI Annual Scientific Meeting

New treatments and clinical insights will be shared at this year's American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Annual Scientific Meeting.

New research and clinical insights are awaiting attendees of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting in Anaheim, California. The theme of this year’s meeting, which runs from November 9 through November 13, 2023, is “Embracing the Evolution of Patient Care.

The ACAAI meeting attracts clinicians from various fields, including dermatology, and features expert speakers from around the world on varying topics. The dermatology track features informative sessions, posters, hands-on workshops, and the ever-popular Jeopardy game show session.

On Friday, dermatologically interested clinicians can attend a hands-on workshop on advanced patch testing and interpretation. The session is moderated by Kelly M. Maples, MD, FACAAI, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She has a great interest in dermatology, and she has chaired the ACAAI Dermatology Committee for the past 6 years. Maples also serves as Chair of the ACAAI Dermatology Scientific Counsel as well as the ACAAI Expert Committee on Atopic Dermatitis. She also helped develop the resource Eczema in Skin of Color.

Those interested in learning when to perform shave versus punch biopsies can attend the “Making the Cut” hands-on workshop on Saturday. The discussion will include technical issues like biopsy techniques, selecting lesions and sites for the highest diagnostic yield, and insights in understanding the resulting dermatopathologist report to support diagnosis and treatment planning. David Randolph Weldon, MD, FACAAI, FAAAI, adjunct associate professor of Internal Medicine at Texas A&M University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, will moderate this session and provide clinical insights.

“What’s That Rash?” is the title of this year’s Jeopardy session, which is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Utilizing the popular quiz-show format, moderator David R. Stukus, MD, FACAAI, and faculty Kelly M. Maples, MD, FACAAI, Luz S. Fonacier, MD, FACAAI, Anitha Shrikhande, MD, and Dermatology Times board member Andrew Alexis, MD, MPH, will discuss various skin diseases, identify patterns and clues for diagnosis, and provide insights into the formulation of effective treatment strategies.

Alexis, the vice chair for diversity and inclusion for the Department of Dermatology and professor of clinical dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, also joins an impressive panel discussing “Hot Topics and Practical Pearls in Dermatology” on Sunday. The panel will present clinical insights on prurigo nodularis, photodermatoses, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, urticaria, hereditary angio-oedema, pruritus, and bullous eruption.

Several other sessions and posters focus on physical and chronic spontaneous urticaria. ACAAI has invited a number of experts to discuss standards of care as well as explore novel therapies in clinical trials that hold promise for future clinical use.

Monday’s plenary session, “Don’t Be Scared of the Skin: Practical Pearls to Treat Urticaria and Atopic Dermatitis,” will be moderated by Program Chair Jay A. Lieberman, MD, FACAAI. The session promises to cover updates from the latest guidelines and practice parameters to support clinicians treating allergic dermatologic diseases.

Additional educational opportunities include literature reviews, which will discuss studies and articles from the past year that clinicians may have missed but that have important clinical implications, and practice management sessions, which explore tips to improve and build upon efficiencies for successful practices.

“The Annual Meeting Program Committee has developed outstanding sessions with Podium to Practice tips for easy integration into practice,” Lieberman shared in the program guide. He noted the conference will include “sessions designed to provide our attendees with unparalleled education on today’s most effective treatments.”

This year the conference has both live and virtual components. For those unable to attend, Dermatology Times® will be sharing insights and highlights from sessions via articles and videos. Those interested in breaking news should subscribe to the enewsletter and follow us on social media.
