The top 25 psoriasis authors

Author(s):

In 2018 at just five days into the New Year, a search of PubMed revealed 86 new psoriasis studies. So, who is leading the pack?

Medical literature search databases contain thousands of published articles on psoriasis from papers reporting the results of clinical trials to papers that focus on suicide ideation. In 2018, at just five days into the New Year, a search of PubMed revealed 86 new psoriasis studies. A new analysis that goes back 12 years provides some insight in terms of which authors are cited most often in the literature.

The analysis included the top four high-impact journals and specifically focused on most cited authors published studies on psoriasis between 2000 and 2012.

The analysis, published in 2016 in the Dermatology Online Journal - published by the University of California Davis - shows that of 3,073 papers on psoriasis and plaque psoriasis in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD); Archives of Dermatology (JAMA Dermatology); the British Journal of Dermatology (BJD); and the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (JEADV), Alice Gottlieb, M.D., Ph.D., was the top-cited first author on psoriasis articles. Dr. Gottlieb, of New York Medical College, is an expert in psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and related disorders. She has reported the results of many clinical trials over the years including studies on secukinumab, ixekizumab  and apremilast.

In the analysis, the researchers took some of the criteria used to determine a journal’s impact factor and applied them to individual authors of articles focused on psoriasis. Impact factor was based on a formula that includes the number of citations the journal receives.

About half of the papers (49%) were meeting abstracts, and 30% were original articles, while 12% were letters and the remaining 4% were review articles, according to the report. There were 43,129 citations of those articles from 14,638 citing articles.

Alice Gottlieb received 1,506 first author citations, making her the top cited first author, followed by James Krueger with 1,063 citations, Alan Menter with 926, Mark Lebwohl with 902, and Kim Papp with 724.

Alan Menter was the top-cited author overall, receiving a total of 3,955 citations, followed by Christopher Griffiths with 3,682, Alice Gottlieb with 3,378, Mark Lebwohl with 3,310, and Steven Feldman with 2,556, according to the published results.

JOURNALS AND GEOGRAPHY

37% of the published psoriasis articles appeared in JAAD, while 35% appeared in BJD, 22% in JEADV, and 6% in Arch Dermatol/JAMA Dermatology. The top territory was the United States, which accounted for 37.7% of papers, and the top organization was the University of Manchester, which had 5.0% of the papers.

The most cited psoriasis paper in the entire 12-year period was, “The impact of psoriasis on quality of life - Results of 1998 National Psoriasis Foundation Patient-Membership Survey” by Krueger et al. which received 538 citations.
