London, England

- Male-pattern hair loss can possibly be attributed to air pollution and smoking, according to a study published in the

Journal of Investigative Dermatology

.

Researchers removed hair follicles from balding men to study the samples, and found that in addition to inherited traits, environmental factors, such as air pollution, could cause stress to the hair follicles, impairing the ability of the hair to make a fiber, the dailymail.co.uk reports.

The findings suggest that if you stop smoking or live in an area with less air pollution, you may be able to prevent hair loss.
