Study reports effectiveness of diphencyprone in palmoplantar-wart treatment

Parkville, Victoria, Australia - Researchers here report that patient-applied ointment comprising 0.1 percent diphencyprone and 15 percent salicylic acid in white soft paraffin is effective in treating palmoplantar warts.

According to a study conducted at Royal Children’s Hospital here, 50 consecutive suitable patients with one or more palmoplantar warts who were treated with the ointment followed up clinically and assessed by patient questionnaire. The success rate in this series was 88 percent, with wart clearance ranging from less than four weeks to about four months. About 90 percent of these patients rated their treatment as “excellent” or “good,” while 10 percent stated that the reaction induced by diphencyprone was “too severe.”
