Tina Alster, M.D., founding director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington, D.C. and clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University, talked with Dermatology Times’ Pamela Kreigh about the most important developments in laser scar revision and rejuvenation.

Dr. Alster chaired the “Lasers II - Rejuvenation and Scars” workshop at the 23rd World Congress of Dermatology in Vancouver. The workshop learning objectectives were:

  • Outline appropriate fractionated laser techniques for various skin phototypes and conditions.

  • Identify possible side effects and complications of fractionated lasers used for skin rejuvenation and scars.

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of new and future laser technologies and techniques

She provided perspective on not only the “what” of laser scar revision, but the “why” of it in the dermatological community, sharing her opinions on:

  • Why the current developments in laser scar revision are important

  • Which devices are the most effective

  • Which conditions benefit the most from laser scar revision

  • What the key takeaways are for dermatologists
