This Hair Loss Awareness Month, let us know your experiences. Click here to answer this week's poll.
What form of hair loss do you most commonly treat in your practice?
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss. In the United States, more than 80 million adults are affected by pattern hair loss, with 20 million more men impacted than women.1
The National Alopecia Areata Foundation estimates that 6.7 million people in the United States are affected by alopecia areata, which encompasses several degrees of autoimmune-related hair loss, including patchy alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis, and alopecia incognita, among others.2
Some forms of hair loss are quite rare, including cicatricial alopecia, which the Cleveland Clinic estimates is part of the 7% of cases seen by health care providers related to hair loss. Scarring alopecias, such as cicatricial alopecia, are signficantly less common than nonscarring alopecias, which account for anywhere between 50% to 75% of cases of hair loss in adult patients over the age of 50 years old.3
