Pointers With Portela: What is the Role of Vitamin A in Acne Treatment?

In this week’s Pointers With Portela, the 208SkinDoc dives into the efficacy and adverse effects of generic vitamin A to treat acne.

In one of his most recent YouTube episodes, "Vitamin A in the Treatment of Acne," Dustin Portela, DO, a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Treasure Valley Dermatology in Boise, Idaho, reviews the role of vitamin A in the treatment of acne, specifically as a generic supplement and as a synthetic version in Accutane (isotretinoin).

In this episode, Portela discusses a study that evaluates the safety and efficacy of generic vitamin A to treat acne. From his review, Portela still recommends Accutane as the safer and more effective agent.

"Consumers are frequently looking for natural treatments for acne and vitamin A has been of interest for a long time. Accutane is essentially a synthetically modified version of vitamin A and although it works very well for acne, it does have some drawbacks. However, natural doesn't always mean safe when it comes to vitamins and supplements," said Portela.
