Physician Assistant Profession Ranks 5th in List of 100 Best Jobs

For the third consecutive year, physician assistants ranked number 2 behind nurse practitioners in the individual healthcare sector listing.

Career satisfaction, ample employment opportunities, and attractive salaries associated with the Physician Assistant profession are among the reasons U.S. News & World Report ranked PA jobs 5th in the annual ranking of the top 100 US jobs.

In the 2024 report recently released, PAs trail IT managers at number 4, software developers at number 3, financial managers at number 2, and nurse practitioners at number 1. For the third consecutive year, PAs ranked number 2 behind nurse practitioners in the individual healthcare sector listing.

“The PA consistently secures its position among the nation's top jobs, providing healthcare enthusiasts with the opportunity to apply advanced medical training and cutting-edge technology in assisting patients reach their healthcare objectives,” said SDPA Board of Directors President Laura Bush, DMSc, PA-C, DFAAPA. “With the escalating demand for accessible and high-quality healthcare, we anticipate a corresponding rise in the need for PAs. PAs play a crucial role in any medical team dedicated to delivering the quality healthcare that patients rightfully deserve.”

To calculate the Best Jobs, U.S. News & World Report draws data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify jobs with the greatest hiring demand. Jobs are then scored using five component measures: future prospects, wage potential, employment, job safety and stability, and work-life balance. For further details on how the rankings were calculated, see the methodology, a statement released by the company said.
