Nutraceuticals: A Boost for Skin Health

Proper nutrition and nutraceuticals can help to manage skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

At South Beach Symposium 2025, Glynis Ablon, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Manhattan Beach, California, and an associate clinical professor at UCLA, gave a talk titled, “Nutraceuticals, Supplements, and More.” During the presentation, Ablon emphasized the critical role of nutrition in dermatology and urged clinicians to have these conversations with their patients. Speaking from her experience at the Ablon Skin Institute and Research Center, she highlighted how diet and nutraceuticals can significantly impact skin and hair health.

Nutritional Deficiencies and the Impact on Skin Health

Ablon stressed that the standard American diet often lacks essential nutrients, leaving most individuals with deficiencies that can negatively affect their skin and overall well-being. While an ideal diet might negate the need for supplements, the reality is that nearly everyone, including healthcare professionals, falls short of optimal nutrition.

The Potential of Nutraceuticals

Ablon said nutraceuticals offer a valuable addition to dermatological care, with research supporting their efficacy in managing conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne. Though the literature on this topic is not extensive, Ablon said existing studies demonstrate the potential for nutraceuticals to complement traditional treatments.

Evidence-Based Approach

Ablon advised clinicians to review available research on nutrition and nutraceuticals. She provides her patients with educational materials, including handouts and articles, to guide them in understanding their nutritional needs and identifying supplements that may address deficiencies or support specific skin conditions.

Caution Against Social Media Trends

Ablon expresses concern about misinformation from social media platforms like TikTok, cautioning patients against adopting unverified trends that could harm their skin. She encourages individuals to prioritize evidence-based recommendations and seek products backed by clinical trials.

A Multifaceted Treatment Strategy

Recognizing that dermatological conditions often have complex, multifactorial causes, Ablon advocates for a holistic approach. By addressing nutritional gaps and incorporating nutraceuticals into treatment plans, patients can enhance their skin health as part of a broader therapeutic strategy.
