Noninvasive ultrasound makes waves

San Ramon, Calif. - The first noninvasive ultrasound treatment for body contouring yielded measurable results in a multicenter controlled clinical study, investigators report.

A single treatment with UtraShape Contour I with G-NIUS Technology (UltraShape Inc.) yielded a measurable average reduction of 2 cm (0.79 inch) in a clinical study of 137 patients, including patients from the United States, Great Britain and Japan, according to results presented at the 2006 annual meeting of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

Karyn Grossman, M.D., co-director, Santa Monica Institute of Laser and Esthetic Surgery and chief, division of dermatology, St. John's Hospital, Santa Monica, Calif., says the device selectively targets localized fat deposits without harming surrounding tissues. The technology is based on two proprietary innovations: noninvasive focused ultrasound and advanced tracking and guiding software.

While the UltraShape Contour 1 system is being used in 37 countries, it has not been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for marketing in the United States.
