Jeremy Brauer, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon, and the founder and director of Spectrum Skin and Laser in Purchase, New York, recently published his latest textbook, Men’s Aesthetics: A Practical Guide to Minimally Invasive Treatment. Brauer’s new aesthetic guide features contributions from Sebastian Cotofana, MD, PhD; Michelle Henry, MD, FAAD; Cameron Chestnut, MD; Nazanin Saedi, MD, FAAD, and more special guest contributors.
Important topics such as aesthetic concerns in men, men of color, and transgender patient care are all thoroughly discussed to enable dermatology clinicians to provide the best aesthetic care. Other key chapters cover facial aging and anatomical considerations, hair restoration, fat and cellulite treatments, aesthetic concerns in skin of color patients, and aesthetic concerns in transgender patients.
Dermatology Times spoke with Brauer to learn more about the process of producing his newest textbook and the importance of the materials discussed within it.
Dermatology Times: What are you most proud of with the publication of your new textbook?
Brauer: The accomplishment of a truly collaborative, high quality, high yield, and comprehensive effort. Our contributors were international in scope, and experts in their fields with specialties ranging from pathology to oculoplastic surgery.
Dermatology Times: What advice do you have for other physicians who may be considering medical textbook publishing?
Brauer: My advice to other physicians interested in publishing a medical textbook is simple - make sure it’s a true professional passion or goal of yours - “a labor of love” as one contributor described it. Due to COVID, and other issues that arose during the process, this effort was nearly half a decade in the making from first conversations and conceptualization to the soon-to-be-published product (yes, it’s available now as pre-order!).
Dermatology Times: Male patients are not as often represented in aesthetic materials and education; how does your textbook bring more awareness to considerations for men?
Brauer: Technologies and techniques continue to improve, making minimally invasive aesthetic procedures safer, more effective, and more sought after in general. Awareness and acceptance by male patients specifically, has fueled interest in this subject by physicians and others in the aesthetic space. The hope is that this textbook will serve as both a reference and educational tool for those interested in building and growing a male aesthetic practice.
Dermatology Times: Out of the topics discussed in your textbook, what do you feel is the most important or deserves more recognition in discussions about non-invasive treatment for men?
Brauer: Trick question right? I am beyond grateful to all of the contributing authors, who are considered by all to be experts in the field. These chapters are well-organized, thoughtful, and enjoyable to read! The topics discussed range from anatomical considerations of the aging male face to the aesthetic concerns in transgender patients - and everything in between - a truly comprehensive textbook on the subject of minimally invasive treatments in men.
