One substance used in the manufacture of plastics to enhance flexibility is Bisphenol A, also known as BPA. BPA is found in food containers, dental fillings and vitamin gel capsules. It also is found in milk, butter and meats, just like phthalates, and is also considered a hormone disruptor.
Rodent studies on BPA reveal concerns.
Fourth generation rodents of parents exposed to BPA demonstrated pubertal abnormalities, obesity, and ovarian/prostate/kidney disease. Changes were also observed in sperm DNA methylation patterns resulting in inherited hormone disruption. BPA has also been associated with personality changes in rodents. One experiment fed mice BPA laced chow to increase blood levels equivalent to levels found in pregnant women.
The 5th generation mice spent less time exploring their cages and more time with other mice. It is theorized that the personality shifts might be due to altered vasopressin and oxytocin levels, both known to affect behavior.
