At Fall Clinical 2024, Ablon shared her top device-based interventions, from wound care to radiofrequency rejuvenation, revealing clinical pearls for enhanced aesthetic outcomes.

“I love talking about aesthetics and devices; key points especially because those are little tidbits that you can take with you,” said Glynis Ablon, MD, in an interview with Dermatology Times to discuss her sessions at Fall Clinical 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ablon, a board-certified dermatologist, associate clinical professor at UCLA, and owner of the Ablon Skin Institute and Research Center in Manhattan Beach, California, presented her practice tips during “Aesthetics and Devices: 2024 & Beyond,” Topical Gold: Acne and Beyond,” and “Innovation and the Future of Aesthetics: Panel.”

Ablon presented 5 innovative aesthetic devices and treatments, focusing on wound care, eye health, filler complications, painless transdermal delivery, and radiofrequency skin rejuvenation. She highlighted a fibrin-based wound care product, an oscillation device for eye relief, a filler complication checklist, and tools for pain-free product delivery and skin lifting with no downtime. Ablon also shared advances in microneedling with radiofrequency, gold particles for acne, and exosome technology, noting exosomes’ transformative potential in wound healing, hair restoration, and skin rejuvenation.

Ablon’s Session Highlights

Five Key Innovations in Dermatologic Devices and Treatments

1) Fibrin-Based Wound Care

Ablon highlighted a new fibrin-based wound care product with a sericin coating that significantly enhances the healing process. This technology supports cell migration, re-epithelization, hemostasis, and angiogenesis. Its structure also helps the absorption of advanced products like exosomes into wounds, improving the healing rate and quality. Ablon finds it particularly useful in clinical settings for wound care and believes it holds promise for procedures that benefit from improved topical product absorption.

2) Automated Oscillation Device for Eye Health

An automated oscillation device, designed to alleviate common issues in eye health, is another tool that Ablon finds transformative, particularly for menopausal women experiencing dry eye symptoms. Ablon described this device as ideal for managing conditions like styes, Demodex, rosacea around the eyelids, and persistent dry eye symptoms. She notes that after 2 weeks of use, her own symptoms of film-like dryness in the eyes disappeared, making it a compelling addition to her clinical recommendations.

3) Filler Complication Checklist

In aesthetic practices, filler complications, although rare, demand quick and efficient response protocols. Ablonadvisedclinicians to maintain a comprehensive filler complication checklist in exam rooms and nursing stations. This checklist acts as a quick reference to guide clinical teams on handling complications, ensuring that both the staff and clinician are prepared for any adverse events that may arise.

4) Transdermal Infusion Device

A transdermal infusion device offering painless delivery of topical products using microcurrents is another favorite of Ablon. This technology is especially appealing to patients sensitive to pain, as it allows for effective infusion of therapeutic products into the skin with minimal discomfort. In aesthetic dermatology, where patient comfort significantly impacts satisfaction,Ablon finds this device enhances the experience and results for patients seeking gentle, effective treatments.

5) Radiofrequency Electrical Stimulation Device

Ablon’s final topic was a radiofrequency device paired with electrical stimulation, providing non-invasive skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime. This device offers weekly treatments that patients can undergo without disrupting daily routines, making it highly desirable for individuals seeking subtle anti-aging effects. Over time, patients report enhanced skin lifting, volume, and tone. Ablon considers it ideal for those wanting gradual improvement without the commitment or recovery of more invasive procedures.

Bonus Insights: Advances in Microneedling, Gold Particles, and Exosomes

Beyond her top 5, Ablon shared insights on the evolving field of microneedling combined with radiofrequency, which allows deeper skin penetration and treatment flexibility, such as targeting subcutaneous fat with reduced pain and downtime. Gold particle technology, a favorite for inflammatory acne, leverages 1064nm lasers to target sebum production and shrink sebaceous glands, with future applications anticipated in autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases.

Ablon concluded with a nod to exosome technology, especially in wound care and hair regrowth. Early results from her hair growth study demonstrate exosomes’ potential in skin and follicular rejuvenation, affirming her belief that exosomes are a transformative addition to dermatologic care, offering faster recovery and enhanced procedural outcomes.
