Fostering Collaboration and Mentorship in Dermatology

At this year’s Illinois Society for Dermatology Physician Assistants Midwestern Conference in Chicago, Illinois, Renata Block, MMS, PA-C, interviewed Karan Lal, DO, to discuss the importance of education among colleagues, the benefits of working closely with advanced practice providers, and the positive impact of mentorship. 

Block, a board-certified physician assistant at SKIN Dermatology in Munster, Indiana, and a Dermatology Times Editorial Advisory Board member met with Lal, a fellow Dermatology Times Editorial Advisory Board member and the only dual fellowship-trained pediatric and cosmetic dermatologist in the US practicing at Affiliated Dermatology in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Mentorship goes both ways. They bring interesting cases to me, and I bring interesting cases to them, and we both learn from each other. We try to collaborate and provide patients with the best outcomes,” said Lal.

• Collaborative Team Dynamics in Dermatology Practices: Both Lal and Block emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach in dermatology practices. Lal highlighted how physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) play a crucial role in patient care, particularly in medical dermatology. The ability to exchange knowledge and cases between professionals fosters a learning environment that benefits patient outcomes.
• Mentorship and Learning in Dermatology: Both speakers stressed the value of mentorship and continuous education. Lal mentioned that learning is a two-way process, where both physicians and PAs/NPs can learn from each other by discussing complex cases. Regular mini grand rounds within their practice contribute to this shared growth.
• Innovative Thinking and Case Discussions: Lal shared an intriguing clinical case involving a PA who suggested using oral minoxidil to enhance repigmentation in a patient with vitiligo and hair loss. This idea prompted further exploration, showing how collaboration can inspire innovative treatment approaches.
• Paying it Forward Through Mentorship: Both Lal and Block discussed the impact of mentorship in their careers. Lal reflected on how the lessons learned from mentors continue to influence his practice, while Block highlighted the long-lasting effects of mentorship, as former students often reach out with gratitude for the knowledge and support they received.
