Factors impacting earlobe dermatitis

Earring dermatitis at the site of a pierced earring can be due to many different factors. It is important to rule out nickel dermatitis and recommend the use of high quality yellow gold earrings.

Q. I am frequently seeing mature women with dermatitis at the site of a pierced earring. What can be done to minimize this problem?

A. Earring dermatitis at the site of a pierced earring can be due to many different factors.  It is important to rule out nickel dermatitis and recommend the use of high quality yellow gold earrings. Sometimes an epidermoid cyst can form at the site of the piercing causing problems and drainage. In other women, it is the thinning of the earlobes that causes problems since the earring must be held very tightly by the earring back in order to remain straight. This squeezing can cause skin problems and is easily remedied by putting a small amount of hyaluronic acid filler into the earlobe. The filler lasts about six months and must then be replaced. It only takes about one-quarter cc to fill both earlobes leaving plenty of filler for rejuvenation of another facial area.
