Robb delved into how the system is transforming skin treatments with advanced precision, faster results, and improved patient outcomes.

The BBL HEROic (BroadBand Light High Energy Rapid Output) system offers enhanced precision and speed in delivering light therapy, targeting various skin conditions such as pigmentation, vascular lesions, and signs of aging.1

Chris Robb, MD, PhD, FAAD, has conducted histology among patients treated with the BBL HEROic system. Robb, a co-founder of Skin and Allergy Center and SAC Cosmetic, located in Tennessee, recently delved deeper into the science behind the BBL HEROic system, its clinical applications, and its impact on the future of dermatologic treatments.

Q&A

Q: Can you provide an overview of the BBL HEROic and its primary applications in dermatology?

A: BBL HEROic is the most effective device for treating skin pigment, telangiectasias (spider veins), and flushing, as well as skin dullness and texture. It can be also used across a broad range of conditions including skin toning and smoothing and, importantly, treatment of difficult acne.

Q: What sets the BBL HEROic apart from other skin treatment devices currently available on the market?

A: Sciton’s BBL has long been the leader in pulsed-light technology. With the introduction of BBL HERO, we saw significant advancements in the synergy of fluence, pulse width, and speed. These innovations transformed our outcomes, delivering more noticeable results in fewer treatments and leading to higher patient satisfaction. Now with the advent of HEROic, there is a paradigm shift in what we should expect from our technology. BBL HEROic is able to track the position, speed, and rotation of the BBL handpiece with a level of intelligence never achieved in the past. BBL HEROic delivers the results you expect with greater safety, while reducing treatment time and ensuring more uniform, beautiful outcomes—setting a new standard never before achieved.

Q: What specific skin conditions have you seen the most success in treating with the BBL HEROic?

A: BBL HEROic effectively treats pigment, erythema, and broken blood vessels, but the real transformation is in the skin’s dramatically improved texture and reflectivity—far exceeding expectations.

Q: Can you share any data or outcomes from your histology work on patients treated with the BBL HEROic?

A: As a dermatologist and dermatopathologist with expertise in histological analysis, I examined tissue samples from skin treated with BBL HEROic. My results showed a significant improvement in both the structure and density of collagen. However, what stood out to me even more was the marked increase in the quality and quantity of elastin fibers. I also feel it contributes to the skin's improved smoothness and texture, leading to a more youthful appearance.

Q: What has been the feedback from patients regarding comfort and recovery time after undergoing treatment?

A: Patients ask for BBL HEROic by name now and love seeing the technology work. They love the results even more.

Q: Are there any specific patient demographics or skin types that you believe benefit the most from this technology?

A: There are safe levels of HEROic for most skin types.

Q: How do you envision the role of devices like the BBL HEROic evolving in the field of dermatology over the next few years?

A: I imagine every device company is again scrambling to keep up with Sciton. The intelligence programmed into the device has changed the paradigm for these devices. Established dermatologists and new residents alike will begin to demand this technology in our devices now that we have it. As far as the evolution of the device, we have to use our imagination. Perhaps robotics will enter the field.

Q: What advice would you give to practitioners considering the integration of the BBL HEROic into their practice?

A: There is no better device for starting a practice or entering into the cosmetic world of pulsed-light technology. If I had only one machine it would be the mJoule from Sciton, which includes BBL HEROic. With that device, you can treat just about anything that comes into the door, and you’ve partnered with the best and most scientific laser company in the world.
