Alma Lasers announced in a press release today the availability of BeautiFill as the first laser-based procedure for fat harvesting in the process of using autologous fat to restore volume to the face or body.
An in-office procedure performed under local anesthetic, BeautiFill uses a proprietary laser system designed to gently loosen and harvest live fat cells from the typical body areas including the abdomen, hips, flanks and thighs, according to the company.
Physicians have been using fat as a “natural” anti-aging filler for years. “I’ve been performing autologous fat transfer for over a decade in my practice and primarily recommend it to patients that require pan-facial volumization,” according to Yael Halaas, M.D., FACS, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Manhattan, N.Y., who is quoted in the release. “Today, more than ever, patients want natural, longer-lasting results, so while fat transfer is becoming more of a relevant conversation for my patients, there haven’t been any real advancements for decades that improved the efficacy and efficiency of this procedure until BeautiFill.”
In terms of efficacy, cell survival in autologous fat transfer is a primary concern as it is unpredictable, according to board-certified dermatologist Jeffrey T.S. Hsu, M.D. “In a clinical study, BeautiFill reported one of the highest average fat viability results - greater than 95%. What impressed me further was that every patient in the study achieved greater than 90% fat survival,” he said in the press release.
