A Puzzling Case of Redness in Atopic Dermatitis

A patient with atopic dermatitis presents with redness and other unusual symptoms. What's the diagnosis?

“Joanna” is a 33-year-old patient with atopic dermatitis. She has been treated with a topical steroid and has responded fairly well, despite a few flares. Joanna presents to your office with flaking and peeling skin and reports a burning sensation in the affected areas. Upon examination, you also notice oozing, puss-filled bumps as well as swelling. In chatting with Joanna, she also reports fatigue, insomnia, and changes in her mood.
