A Novel Facial Filler Technique

A recent study highlights the advantages of a novel injection protocol for dermal fillers that uses the line of ligament concept to efficiently lift and volumize the infraorbital area.

The line of ligaments describes the imaginary line separating the mid-and lateral face and connects the trajectory between the four major facial ligaments: the temporal ligamentous adhesion, lateral orbital thickening, the zygomatic ligament, and the mandibular ligaments.

The study, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, included 306 Caucasian patients (270 female, 36 male) who underwent a standardized injection protocol of six boluses and one retrograde fanning technique injection with high G-prime soft tissue filler in the infraorbital area with a 22-gauge and 25-gauge blunt-tip cannula, respectively.

The medial midface was measured using landmarks on the skin and was compared before and after the injection of the partial and total algorithm.

Overall results show that the anatomic concepts proposed in the study can help physicians to reposition facial structures when re-volumizing the midface.
