6 questions to ask during performance reviews

Annual employee performance reviews rank near the top of least favorite tasks for most physicians and their staff. Here are 6 questions to ask your employees to get the most out of the review process.

Annual employee performance reviews rank near the top of least favorite tasks for most physicians. Virtually everyone feels averse to giving and receiving feedback; however, when performed well, these can be excellent communication tools for keeping employees motivated and maintaining a well-run office. The problem is that very few people have been taught how to do performance reviews effectively. One expert recommends six vital questions to ask your employees to set them at ease and set a positive tone for a productive discussion.

Get your employees thinking positively about their contributions. It may surprise you what they come up with.

Make sure your employees feel they are working toward personal and professional goals. Where can you help them?

Starting with positives sets people at ease because everyone feels like they’re coming into a discussion to talk about what they’re doing wrong.

Wording “what are we doing wrong?” in a positive way gives your employee permission to suggest improvements you may not have considered.

This is a great question to help you find the stumbling blocks for each staff member as well as for the group.

Open-ended questions get people talking and sharing things that they might not have otherwise shared. Summing up your review with an action plan will hold both your employee and you accountable for tasks to discuss at your future evaluations.
